Did you want pictures?
Well, I don't have any. Sure, I've taken plenty. In fact, since Seth is five months old today, I took lots of pictures of a "day in the life of Mr. Seth." However, our file server is down right now which is where all the pictures are stored. And the rest are still on the camera. So someday soon, I'll get those posted.
At five months, Seth weighs 16 lbs. and is 25 1/4 inches long. He hasn't hit any major milestones this month... he pretty much just sits there and either smiles or screams. He is eating some solids: peas, squash, and pears. He's sleeping horribly, but he's stinkin' adorable, so you can't really be upset with him even in the midst of a sleepless stupor.
Ian is potty trained! I don't know if I've mentioned that here on the blog. He spent a week at Grandma Carolyn's potty training camp, and came home diaper-free. He still has accidents here and there which mostly occur when we aren't paying attention. He gets to playing and realizes he has to go too late. We forget to constantly remind him. The crazy thing is that he's not even wearing diapers at night, and he hasn't wet the bed at all. And we haven't had a single accident in public, either. And his accidents most often occur in the bathroom, so he already knows he needs to go. So, thanks, Grandma, for helping us over that little hump. He wasn't really responding well to our efforts, plus we tend to be a bit preoccupied these days. But perhaps a change of scenery and a consistent method is what did the trick!
About a month ago, I joined a couple moms' groups through meetup.com. It's been nice to have some different gatherings and events to go to, but I don't think I'm going to meet my new best friend this way. They are groups of about 40-60 moms who pick and choose between various "play dates." So, I don't know if I've even seen the same group of moms twice! But like I said, it gets us out and about... Ian loves to go, go, go, and he enjoys playing "with friends." And I always have good conversation, and I've certainly gotten good advice and encouragement.
I've added a Wednesday Mother's Day Out to Ian's usual T/Th gig. That wasn't the initial plan, although this particular program also accepts Seth's age, so I now have an afternoon completely free from both boys which is nice. I've been debating on keeping it since that puts Ian in childcare three days a week, but I really need some time to work. And this church doesn't charge as much as others do, so it's not adding a whole lot of cost, really. I don't know... we're trying it out for now. The ideal would be for the T/Th program to take Seth, too, but a lot of local churches start at 12 or 18 months.
Well, I guess that's my "news" for now. I'm pretty tired these days since Seth still wakes several times a night. I'm at a loss for what to do, but we're operating in survival mode hoping that "this too shall pass."

The Saga Continues...
Seth continues to be a different baby than his brother. Let me see if I can recall the ways that I've seen recently.
First of all, he's about a month ahead size-wise. At his four month checkup, he was a whole pound heavier than Ian was at that age... and longer, too. We are already wearing size 6-9 month clothes and making the transition to size 3 diapers!
Ian started sleeping through the night at about age 4 months. Seth starting sleeping WORSE at this age. We have no idea why and have tried various methods to improve his sleep habits. Seth is an excellent eater, though... that is, we've made headway with his solids. Ian just couldn't get the hang of the spoon at this age, but Seth took to it pretty quickly. Seth will also eat his veggies (so far, peas and squash) whereas Ian was a pretty picky eater from the beginning (and still is).
Ian was a pretty content baby and would self-entertain quite a bit. Seth tends to offer extremes... he's super happy when he's, well, happy and if something is wrong in his world, he is quick to let you know. In other words, he gives the biggest smiles and the loudest screams. He also LOVES attention and almost requires it in order to remain content. He still fusses in the car, although adding a car fan back there for some airflow has helped considerably. I am thinking of upgrading his car seat for more comfort. I think because of his size, we'll have to do this soon anyway. His feet are already to the edge of his infant carrier.
Ian has always been keen on his gross motor skills and has hit those milestones relatively early. At age five months, Ian was rolling all over the place. Seth only rolls occasionally from his front to back. He attempts to roll from back to front, but can't figure out what to do with the arm closest to the floor. His head support is also occasionally wobbly. He probably doesn't get as much tummy time or floor play... mainly because he doesn't like it. Seth, however, is pretty good with his hands, and may be moving forward with his fine motor skills better than Ian. He can grab things really well, and loves to touch and scratch things. He also loves to grab things with his feet!
Still no teeth, but man this kid is drooly! Ian's first tooth came around six months, so we'll see. Seth started drooling like crazy at around two months, so I thought for sure we'd have a tooth surface by now. Speaking of teething, Ian still doesn't have his two-year molars. I wonder when those are supposed to come in? I also wonder when you're supposed to start taking them to the dentist.
In some small ways, they are the same (at this age). They both are/were still swaddled to sleep. Seth just started playing in the exersaucer, and this is around the time that Ian enjoyed it, too. They both have cute chunky thighs, super long eyelashes, and big expressive eyes. They definitely look like brothers. Seth is also enamored with Ian... he always has a smile for big brother, often giggles at him, and certainly follows his every move. Ian is also pretty sweet and affectionate with Seth with only an occasional rough play or intentional hit. He hit him by accident the other night and was so remorseful. It will definitely be fun to see how the brotherhood develops around here.

Quick Update
So, Ian will most definitely be going as Buzz Lightyear. I think he will be excited about it. I bought the costume today, but I haven't shown it to him, yet. It's thin material, so I think that'll be good for our Texas heat (and our early October Halloween event). The verdict is still out for Seth. I think the lion costume would be cute and most likely fit OK (a little big). I'm just worried that it will be so hot. He doesn't seem to like hats in general, and he also seems to be pretty hot natured as it is. I have a "Happy Halloween" onesie that might play backup as his "costume" then. I am still tempted to order the Woody costume, but the sizes are 0-6 months and 12-18 months... what happened to the 6-12 month size? Anyway, I suppose I shouldn't get too worked up over it.
Speaking of holidays, does anyone else feel like the holidays are RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER? Something about when fall hits... wow!

The Great Debate
So, fall is on the horizon and soon it will be the holiday season! Halloween is the first one on the docket, although I know many people have their qualms about Halloween. I'm not into all the scary or kinky stuff (I mean, have you seen the adult costumes?), but I think it's awfully cute to put children in fun costumes and do fun activities like church carnivals and such. Heck, now that we live in an actual neighborhood, perhaps we'd participate in trick-or-treating?
We do have one event on the calendar, an Octoberfest type of thing at John's work. They encourage children to wear their costumes... and it's on October 1 this year! That means I don't have until the 31st to get cracking on this costume thing. So, I've been thinking about what to do, but have run into a few dilemmas.
First question... should I try to dress the boys in coordinating costumes? Like Batman and Robin for example. The only problem with that is Ian doesn't have any concept of Batman. If he picked his own hero costume, it would most certainly be Buzz Lightyear (which I can only find as small as 3T). So, how about Woody and Buzz? Or in browsing some sites, I came across a few other ideas: Snoopy and Woodstock, C3PO and R2D2, or a cowboy and indian.
This could quite possibly be the last year that I get to choose Ian's costume. I'm sure he'll have more of an opinion about it in years to come. So, if I want the boys to coordinate, this is it.
Or I could not worry about coordinating, let Ian pick what he wants to wear, and put Seth in a hand-me-down costume from his cousin (pic below). It's a super cute costume, although Caleb wore it at age 11 months, and Seth will only be 6 months old. So, I'm not sure if it will fit or not, but I think it's hard to get a good fit on these baby costumes anyway.
So, any votes or ideas?

Labor Day Post
Well, Labor Day isn't quite the Americana holiday as the Fourth or Memorial Day when this outfit may have been more appropriate. But it fits right now, and all of America celebrated today, so we felt a little festive. Here is my Seth man (aka the anti-sleeper) at four months old.
