The next dilemma

Since I am hopelessly incapable of making decisions on my own without soliciting the advice of anyone whose opinion I actually value (hence, my rallying for support for the red wall) here is my next dilemma.

I have been a member at Curves (women's workout facility) for three years now. For about two years and six months, I loved it. Starting this year, however, I seemed to have lost interest. Lately, I haven't been going as much because I don't have a car. But the thought of going back doesn't excite me. But I need to do SOMETHING. I have already vowed to stay away from a swimsuit as much as possible this summer.

What should I do? (Besides get my car back.)

Option 1: Suck it up and go back to Curves. It's relatively cheap, it works if I also watch what I eat, and it's easy. It's a routine, and that helps me. I often get lost or distracted in a gym. Oh, and it's close to home.

Option 2: Join the Y. An individual membership would only cost $8 more than Curves. I may not do well in the gym, but they offer lots of classes I could take at the 5:30 hour. It's close to my work. I have friends who go there. John could go too, and we'd get the family membership. He has expressed some interest in getting into shape. And they have a pool, but, like I said, no swimsuit for me unless I have to.

Option 3: I'm almost embarrassed to say that I got sucked into one of those infomercials, "20 Minutes a Day, and you could have a body like this!" But, it's called TurboJam, and it looks kinda fun, kickboxing + hip hop. It's $60, but that's only two months of Curves, and it would be unlimited workouts. That is, if I actually did it. I tried a workout video once. I didn't like it, but I don't know if that's because of the video or the fact that I was at home and would rather do something else.

Option 4: I'm open to suggestions!

I have been looking for a magically fun workout as well. My search has been going on for about 5 years. I can tell you what doesn't work: Pilates video, TaeBo video, university fitness center, treadmill (in front of TV and with radio), walking the dog, and doing nothing and expecting to stay in shape anyway.

I'm going to keep checking these posts to see if anyone else has a brilliant idea.

Jon and I have just bought bikes, and we have LOVED it! Granted, we've only had them since Saturday, so the "newness" hasn't quite worn off, yet. But we've decided to go around our block most days (2.5 miles around, so we can go up in that increment), and then once a week or two, do a "challenge" ride where we bike to the seminary or somewhere far, far away. Hopefully that will keep our interest up. Since it's outside, we have to do it in the morning, which is where I can see a problem coming, since Jon works late at night, and doesn't like mornings anyway. We'll see how it goes!

I have Iron Yoga and Walk Off the Pounds tapes you can borrow. Also an EZ Glider.

The trouble is that everything (including dieting) works if you do it; nothing works if you don't.

Hence, motivation is the key! If you want to be in shape to have a baby next year, get back to Curves!

John will never be a fitness buff; forget it.

I DON"T understand the "no swimsuit" rule. Since when does a size 4 have to worry about that? Get real! and go swimming!!

I like what Carolyn said about getting your body ready for a baby. At least I am not the only one who is waiting for a grandchild. I think that you would do better going somewhere that trying something at home. I have many things here at home but I never do them. I think either Curves or the Y is a good choice. The YMCA has many more options for you and John to do so that you don't get bored. I know you will make the right decision. I guess you guys won't be going swimming this weekend when you come. The pool is not swimmer friendly yet anyway.

Ok, wow...as one who is so not on a baby kick or wanting to pressure others into this life changing path (mommas on the board!), I vote for the Y. It is closer to your work, so you won't get so close to home you rather just sit on your couch. And most of all, you can do it together.

Tapes just don't cut it unless you get paid for it. A workout buddy is the key! I love doing things with Joe or Lydia, so I vote for family fun. Just the two of you! Not three! No pressure!

That's the other thing...the Y has free childcare! Curves, I have found, does not cater to the young mother. Of course, it will be a WHILE (sorry, grandmothers-to-be) before I'm needing childcare at a workout facility.

I don't think I'm a size 4 anymore. But the thing with swimsuits is you can't HIDE anything. They expose the areas that I am most self-conscious about (thighs and stomach). And women of all sizes have areas on their bodies they'd like to change. Even my size 0-2 coworker complains. Oh, and my skin is also pasty-white!

OHHH- update!! I get my car back on Wednesday!

I agree with Leanna that a partner is the key. The day one of you doesn't want to go is the day the other is really excited about it. Like you and me on the Bear Trail! :)

And John might actually go do something with you if that was the motivation you needed. I was reading a book yesterday that said, "You don't need to be a size 3, but your [husband] does need to see you making the effort to take care of yourself--and he will take on significant cost or inconvenience in order to support you."

I believe it. Didn't Jon do Pilates with me all last summer? True love is what that was. :)

I can't imagine Jon doing Pilates! But togetherness is usually a good thing...unless being hot, sweaty, and tired from exercising makes you cranky, too! :)

The trouble with exercising is I'm always hungry afterward and want a snack to reward myself for my efforts!! :)

I think we'll "take the tour" at the Y and see if anything there interests John. I've basically got until July 1 to decide because that's when the Curves payment comes out.

I did curves for two years but the idea it took two hours out of my day ruined the fun. Now if I was within biking distance that would be different. What I am doing is videos and walking...bellydance and my old Susan Powter videos. She may be a moron but her workouts are good. I also got my bike out but lugging my fat butt around is hard. I keep on riding though and may actually get over a mile once!!!

We toured the Y, it looks like fun. I think I'll give Curves one more month and then decide.
